Team Chabuk-Sports Desk: Winning the second ODI played in Pune on Friday night, England not only tied the ODI series 1-1 but also achieved their biggest goal against India. After losing the toss, Team India scored 336/6 in the allotted 50 over’s, but England hit 337 off 39 balls left. After the victory of England, now the third match has become decisive which will be played on the same ground on Sunday.
Opener Johnny Bairstow and all-rounder Ben Stokes turned the tide on KL Rahul’s century effort with their stormy innings. Bairstow (124 off 111 balls) and Stokes (99 off 52 balls) rained sixes to neutralize the Indian bowlers. Bairstow hit 11 fours and seven sixes in his innings. Stokes missed a century, but his four fours and 10 sixes played a key role in turning the dice of the match. The duo shared 175 off 114 balls for the second wicket.
Bairstow had earlier added 110 for the first wicket with Jason Roy (55 off 52 balls). Liam Livingstone (27 not out) and Dawid Malan (16 not out) led England to the target after losing three wickets inside nine balls. Earlier, the highlight of the Indian innings was Rahul’s 108 off 114 balls, which included seven fours and two sixes. He added 121 runs for the third wicket with Kohli (66 off 79 balls). Rishabh Pant scored 77 off 40 balls with the help of three fours and seven sixes and shared 113 runs for the fourth wicket with Rahul. Hardik Pandya contributed 35 runs off 16 balls.
The Indian fast bowlers left their mark, but both spinners Kuldeep Yadav and Krunal Pandya failed. These two gave 156 runs in 16 overs. Prasidh Krishna took two wickets for 58 while Bhuvneshwar Kumar took one wicket for 63 runs. Hardik did not bowl. Bairstow and Roy gave England a good start again. These two crossed 50 runs but due to Rohit Sharma’s brilliant fielding, Roy had to run out and return to the pavilion, he hit seven fours and a six in his innings.
Stokes showed responsibility in favor of the third-ranked batsman. Bairstow, who missed a century in the last match, completed his 11th ODI century by hitting a six at midwicket on Kuldeep. Kuldeep disappointed and scored 84 runs in 10 over’s. Stokes hit three sixes in a row on them. Second spinner Krunal Pandya also could not walk, which increased India’s trouble. Stokes also hit three sixes in his next over. In this way, losing 48 runs in two over’s, India’s hopes were dashed.
In such a situation, Bhubaneswar took the ball and caught Stokes by the hands of Pant and deprived him of a century. prasidh Krishna dismissed Bairstow and Jose Butler (zero) in the next over, but Livingstone, playing its first match, leveled the score by hitting two sixes in a row over Bhubaneswar. Earlier, India added 126 runs in the last 10 over’s. This was possible because Kohli and Rahul rescued the team from the initial setbacks and laid a good foundation for later batsmen. India quickly lost the wickets of both their openers Shikhar Dhawan (four) and Rohit Sharma (25).
Kohli completed his 62nd ODI and fourth consecutive half-century in ODIs by taking advantage of the life-giving gift from wicketkeeper Butler, but his wait for the 71st century in international cricket did not end. In an attempt to cut on Rashid’s ball, he caught Butler. Kohli hit three fours and a six in his innings.
Pant hit two sixes on Ben Stokes and the second time he hit a six and a four on Tom Karen to complete his half-century off just 28 balls. Rahul also gave a message to the critics to remain silent after completing his fifth ODI century. This is the first ODI century of an Indian in more than a year. He returned to the pavilion soon after in an attempt to play a long shot though.
Pant took India’s score beyond 300 with his seventh six before catching at the boundary line and also crossed his highest score in ODIs.
