Sri Lanka’s star opener Upul Tharanga has retired from international cricket

Team Chabuk-Sports Desk : Sri Lanka’s star opener Upul Tharanga has retired from international cricket. The left-handed batsman made this big decision at the age of 36. Tharanga had been out of the team for a long time. He last played in an international match in March 2019 against South Africa. After this he did not appear in international matches.

Tharanga announced his retirement by writing a passionate post on his Twitter handle. In it he thanked his family, fans and Sri Lankan cricket. “Every good thing has an end, I think this is the time to say goodbye to my 15-year international cricket career,” he wrote.

Left-arm opener Tharanga is one of the top ODI players in Sri Lankan cricket. He scored around 7000 runs in ODIs and more than 9000 runs in international cricket. Tharanga made his ODI and Test debut in 2005. However, his ODI career was much better than the Tests.

Tharanga played many match winning innings in ODIs. He played 235 matches in this format of cricket and scored 6951 runs with an average of 34 and a strike rate of 76. During this time he played 15 centuries and 37 fifties. His highest score was 174 *. Tharanga is just the second batsman in the world to have been paired seven times in ODI cricket with a partnership of more than 200 runs.

In Test cricket too, Tharanga played 31 matches in which he scored 1754 runs at an average of 32. He scored three centuries and eight fifties.
