Team Chabuk-National Desk : Former US President Donald Trump has survived re-impeachment. The Senate has on January 6 acquitted him of inciting violence in Capitol Hill. In the US Senate voting, 57 senators found Trump guilty of impeachment, while 43 senators found him not guilty. A two-thirds majority, or 67 votes, was required from the Senate to convict Trump.
The impeachment motion was brought against Trump after the violence in Capitol Hill on 6 January in the US, which was approved by the lower house of parliament, but the motion fell in the Senate. 7 MPs from Trump’s Republican Party voted in favor of the motion. The Democratic Party has 50 members in the Senate and required the votes of 17 Republican leaders.
What did Trump’s lawyers say in the Senate?
Lawyers for former President Donald Trump of the country facing impeachment in the riots in the US Capitol (Parliament House) said in the Senate that accusations of inciting treason against the Republican leader were ‘utterly false’ The impeachment proceedings against him are ‘politically motivated’.
On the fourth day of the Senate hearing, Trump’s attorneys Bruce Castor, David Shoyen and Michael van der Veen argued in favor of the former president, one by one, on Friday, saying Trump was a strong supporter of law and order. He did not provoke anarchy in the Capitol. Trump’s lawyers claimed that there was not enough evidence to prove the charges against his client during impeachment.
Trump’s lawyers gave their arguments for about four hours. After this, during the impeachment hearing, the senators working as a jury questioned both the sides. After the arguments of both the parties were completed, voting was held on the 100-member Senate impeachment hearing.
