The purchase of 118 upgraded Arjun tanks was approved in 2012 and in 2014 the Defense Procurement Committee also released Rs 6600 crore for it. But on several sides, including its fire capacity, the army demanded improvement. Meanwhile, in 2015, the army had signed a deal to purchase 464 medium weight T-90 tanks from Russia for Rs 14000 crore. The Arjun Tank Mark-1A got the green signal in 2020 after it was upgraded on the basis of army demand.

Last Batch

118 Arjun Mark-1A tanks will be the last batch of this series. Actually, the Indian Army considers the Arjun tank to weigh around 68 tonnes. Especially against China, this tank cannot be deployed in inaccessible areas of Ladakh and Arunachal Pradesh. For this, the Army has required light tanks of 20 to 25 tons and medium tanks of 30 to 50 tons.
